Manual Configuration

Note: This configuration is only if you do not want to use the GUI configuration program URLExaminer Config.

You can edit urlExaminerConfig.xml with notepad or your favorite text editor.  This file is typically found in C:\Program Files\dmt\urlExaminer.  The following settings need to be changed before using:

  1. LogsFolder – Path to the folder to use for log files.  This folder needs to exist or the service will not start.  Additionally, some locations require additional Windows security settings to allow a Windows service to write to the directory.
  2. SMTPServer - The mail server for sending notifications
  3. SMTPUserID - User ID required to send email (many times your email address)
  4. SMTPPassword - Password for sending mail
  5. SMTPPort – Typically this is 25.
  6. FromAddress - Email address for sending email
  7. ReplyTo - Reply to Email address (typically the same as the FromAddress)
  8. WebpageTimeout – How long in milliseconds to wait for a webpage to load.
  9. LoopInterval – Delay in milliseconds between website checks.
  10. Verbose – True = lots of logging information.  False = Minimal logging information.  Verbose = True is typically used when setting up or testing the service.  This is typically turned off when in production to minimize log file sizes.
  11. KEY – This is used to determine number of licenses purchased.  Don’t change this setting unless purchasing licenses.
  12. Websites - An array of sites to check.  The format for each website is as follows: URL|Text to Find|Exception Start Time |Exception End Time|Single Failure Notification Email|Outage Notification Email|Cookie Name|Cookie Value|CookieDomain
    • URL - The URL of the page to monitor.
    • Text to Find - Text that should always come up on this page.  If this text is not found the page is considered down.
    • Exception Start Time - If there is a time that you don't want to be paged, this is the start of that time.  If you don't want an exception time, enter 12:00am for the start and end time.
    • Exception End Time - (see exception start time).
    • Single Failure Notification Email - Individual failures are sent to this email address.
    • Outage Notification Email - Outage failures are sent to this email address such as a pager or phone email address.
    • Cookie Name – If a cookie is required, enter the name here.
    • Cookie Value – If a cookie is required, enter the value here.
    • Cookie Domain – If is cookie is required, enter the domain here.

NOTE: You must replace every instance of the & character with &  in the URL.  For instance, change http://www.domain.com?id=1&usr=4 to http://www.domain.com?id=1&usr=4

After modifying these settings, go to services (Typically Start, Settings, Administrative Tools, Services) and find URLExaminer.  Right click and select properties, set the startup type to automatic and start the service.  Check the log file (Default location: C:\temp\urlExaminerLogs) to verify correct settings and view success and failures of each check.
